Analysis of Saudi Arabia’s green hydrogen export agreement with Europe and its global implications

Even granting the wildly generous assumption that these vaunted Memoranda of Understanding ever harden into something tangible—and that’s assuming quite a lot—we’re still talking about little more than a drop in the industrial bucket. Two hundred thousand tons of ammonia sounds impressive until you translate it into energy terms: vanishingly small. Yet still, it’s a logistical headache of respectable size.

First question—what vessels are going to move it? They’d have to be small, because production will be continuous, which means buffer tanks must be emptied periodically. But with such tiny production capacity, the tanks themselves will be small, killing any hope of economies of scale.

Then there’s the regulatory minefield. Ammonia isn’t exactly what you’d call “harmless.” It’s toxic, corrosive, and guaranteed to make headlines if spilled—especially when you sterilize a stretch of ocean or a harbor basin in the process. This is theater. Window dressing for every party involved. And nothing more.
