‘Green’ Europe’s Industrial Masochism

Europe will suffer. Let’s be precise: the nations of Europe will suffer, each in its own way, each at its own depth. It will be as uniform and harmonious as finger-paintings by toddlers.
Roll back the clock less than a century. The war was over. People crawled out of their basements into daylight, only to find rubble where cities once stood. No coal, no food, no welfare—nothing. Vienna, my city, looked like Mariupol after the Russians flattened it. My father was ten, my grandfather a prisoner somewhere in the Soviet Union. My father stole bread from the Russians and chewing gum from the Americans. It looked then as if ten generations would be needed to rebuild.
And yet, when I was born in the Sixties, most of the scars were gone. Life was good again. Today, eighty years on, Vienna sits at the top of the Mercer index for quality of life—so many times that the counting has grown tiresome.
The green madness will wreck much. But it will not wreck as much as the war did. And, just as before, we will rebuild. But not until we first drag down the new totalitarians. And we will.
