Engine? Hardly.
That’s the story China wants the gullible to swallow. In reality, the Middle Kingdom has erected vast industrial temples dedicated to churning out every imaginable windmill and solar panel, gambling on the West’s willingness to lap it all up at premium prices. For years, this worked because the West kept the printing presses humming, inflating away the pain while taxpayers and ratepayers were slowly wrung dry like overused dish rags.
But if that stops—if the inflationary gravy train derails and austerity seeps in—then Beijing faces a colossal problem. It will be left sitting atop mountains of green gadgetry that nobody wants, not even at fire-sale prices. To make those exports viable without Western subsidies would require China to practically give them away, cheque for transport costs included.
And so, the propaganda machine roars into life. Western audiences are bombarded with the panicked narrative that they’re “falling behind,” that the great green engine of history is leaving them stranded on the platform. It’s a bluff born of desperation.Make no mistake: green energy has bled the West dry, hollowing economies under the banner of virtue. But the real bind is in Beijing. Their “engine” stalls without our delusion.
