Oh, how many times have we heard this sermon? Enough to lose count. I don’t know the finer points of the latest scuffle, but I do know physics and economics—and both are merciless. Anything that survives only by intravenous injections of political subsidy is living on borrowed time. Once money becomes a truly scarce resource—and it will—no amount of printing presses will paper over the pain. Inflation has a way of crawling out of theory and into people’s kitchens.And when that happens, politicians will smell blood. Electoral survival always trumps ideological crusades. They can pirouette on a dime, and they will. The cash spigot for EVs will tighten, then shut. And when the subsidies vanish, when the special perks dry up, when the free candy stops—good luck flogging those electric toys to a public that suddenly has to pay full price.
