Are they, really? The young are impressionable—achingly so. They’ll run headlong after whatever glittering nonsense happens to be in vogue, so what they’re swooning over today is strategically irrelevant.
And where, exactly, does this “data” come from? I trust any statistic in this arena about as much as I trust my bladder to hold for twenty-four uninterrupted hours. Numbers are dressed up, slimmed down, Photoshopped, and paraded around to suit the cause of the moment.
The climate movement remains vast, influential, and well-fed. But there is a countercurrent. This does not mean alarmism is vanquished; it only means it must now sweat harder for its spoils. It will win battles. So will the opposition. And each side will inflate those wins into epoch-defining triumphs.We, meanwhile, would do well not to be taken in by either chorus.
