Science Doesn’t Float Above Human Nature

Science, at its best, is one of humanity’s noblest pursuits.

Its purpose is beautifully simple.

To describe reality as faithfully as possible.

Not to make reality prettier.

Not to make it politically convenient.

Not to protect anyone’s reputation or funding.

Reality simply is what it is.

Science should approach it with the emotional detachment of a surveyor measuring a landscape. Cold. Ruthless. Clean. Free from ideology, fashion or tribal loyalty. If the evidence contradicts accepted wisdom, then accepted wisdom should give way.

That is the ideal.

Reality, unfortunately, has a habit of interfering with ideals.

The same human nature that shapes every other institution eventually finds its way into science as well.

Lawyers are supposed to serve justice.

Politicians are supposed to serve the people who elected them.

Public administrations are supposed to serve the public.

Medicine is supposed to place the patient’s wellbeing above every other consideration.

Every profession begins with an ideal.

Every profession eventually encounters incentives.

Science is no exception.

Scientists are human beings.

They build careers.

They compete for grants.

They seek tenure.

They publish papers.

They attend conferences.

They acquire prestige, influence and professional standing.

None of that is inherently wrong.

In fact, it is entirely understandable.

The problem begins when those incentives quietly become more powerful than the willingness to question the assumptions on which those careers have been built.

Imagine spending thirty years constructing your professional reputation around one particular framework.

Imagine receiving grants because of it.

Publishing hundreds of papers based upon it.

Training doctoral students within it.

Being invited onto advisory panels because of it.

Now imagine discovering compelling evidence that your central assumptions may be fundamentally flawed.

How easy would it be to become the person who dismantles your own life’s work?

That is not merely an intellectual challenge.

It is a profoundly human one.

This is why the phrase consensus science has always made me uneasy.

Science is a method.

Consensus is a social phenomenon.

The two are not identical.

A scientific consensus may emerge because the evidence is overwhelming.

It may also persist because careers, institutions and funding structures have become organised around maintaining it.

Those possibilities should never be confused.

History reminds us that scientific progress has often begun with a minority view challenging an established one.

Sometimes the challenger is wrong.

Sometimes the establishment is.

That is precisely why criticism is indispensable.

The moment questioning becomes professionally dangerous, science begins drifting away from discovery and towards administration.

And administration has very different priorities.

Entire research ecosystems can grow around particular narratives.

Funding follows fashionable questions.

Universities establish departments.

Governments create agencies.

Private companies develop products.

Consultancies emerge.

International organisations expand.

The flow of money creates its own momentum.

Soon, thousands of careers depend not merely on understanding reality but on preserving the framework through which reality is interpreted.

Again, this does not require dishonesty.

Only ordinary human behaviour.

People naturally defend the systems that have rewarded them.

Most do so without ever believing they are acting improperly.

That is what makes institutional incentives so powerful.

They rarely require conspiracy.

They merely require alignment.

Once status, funding, reputation and public recognition all point in the same direction, very few people feel an overwhelming desire to walk the other way.

After all, what is a little intellectual conformity compared with a lifetime of grants, professional prestige and comfortable certainty?

That question extends far beyond climate science.

It reaches into economics.

Finance.

Public health.

Education.

Virtually every field in which large institutions determine what counts as accepted knowledge.

The question is not whether science occasionally gets things wrong.

Of course it does.

The real question is whether we still possess institutions capable of correcting themselves when the correction threatens the very people expected to make it.

That, more than any particular scientific controversy, is the issue that deserves our attention.
