While that nascent connectivity felt transformative at the time, our actual scholarship remained fundamentally physical: endless hours spent deep within the stacks, wrestling with heavy volumes, parsing jurisprudence that resisted easy synthesis through sheer, grinding intellectual labor.
Yet even then, the institutional rot was already well advanced.
Having navigated the traditional gauntlet of foundational legal education—year after year of unforgiving examinations and doctrinal immersion—I progressed to the master’s level. It was there that the commercial machinery of modern academia revealed its hand. The cohort was suddenly saturated with graduates from adjacent disciplines, primarily business faculties possessing no grounding in legal tradition and lacking even a cursory grasp of basic jurisprudence.
Remarkably, this truncated curriculum granted them parity. Upon conferring the degree, the institution handed these candidates eligibility for the bar examination. Having worked alongside them, I saw the vacuum firsthand: fundamental doctrinal concepts were alien to them. Even the bar examination itself—ostensibly the ultimate gatekeeper of the profession—had been degraded into a solvable puzzle. Those with the financial means simply engaged specialized coaching operations, where candidates were drilled like performative lapdogs to regurgitate specific patterns rather than grasp legal architecture.
The contemporary academic sector has, in large part, transformed into a lucrative confidence game. True intellectual excellence still exists within its walls, but it remains increasingly buried beneath an avalanche of credential inflation and institutional compromise. Universities actively nurture this debasement because it represents an extraordinarily profitable revenue stream: monetizing access while quietly dismantling academic gatekeeping.
Within this framework, original synthesis is an operational nuisance. The apparatus rewards mimicry, penalizes independent inquiry, and prizes the disciplined parrot over the critical thinker.
That architecture is now approaching its reckoning. The coming wave of artificial intelligence will inevitably hollow out the institutional mediocrity that has flourished in the name of professional pedigree. It will expose the emptiness of rote compliance and render the credentialed fraudster obsolete. That demolition is overdue.
