Democracy as Opium

A person placing a ballot into a ballot box in front of an American flag.

Perhaps the most dangerous thing democracy gives us is not freedom, but the illusion of freedom. The ballot lets us choose who governs us, while quietly teaching us to confuse participation with sovereignty. We accept dependency as liberty, promises as policy, and majority rule as morality. The blindfold remains comfortable because removing it creates responsibilities nobody wants.
